Dallas Cowboys Owner Jones Penalized $250,000 for ‘Inadvertent’ Obscene Gesture toward Spectators
The NFL has imposed a substantial $250,000 fine on Dallas Cowboys proprietor Jones for what he claims was an “unintentional” offensive hand signal directed at fans during a Sunday’s game at MetLife Stadium.
Viral video clips seemed to capture Jones flashing his middle finger toward opposing supporters, but Jones insists he was actually signaling approval to Cowboys fans present at the game as his team secured a 37-22 victory.
“That was unfortunate. That was kind of an interaction with our fans seated near me,” Jones stated during a Tuesday interview. “Present was a swarm of Dallas supporters—not Jets fans, Cowboys fans. The entire stadium was filled with excitement for the Cowboys.”
He further emphasized that the signal was completely unintentional, happening amid the elation following the team’s final touchdown. “I simply showed the incorrect digit,” he noted. “The action was inadvertently performed. This is sincere. Should you call it accidental, you can. But it got resolved pretty quick.”
League Precedent for Owner Fines
This is not the first time an NFL owner has been penalized for misconduct. Previous cases include:
- Carolina Panthers proprietor Tepper was penalized $300K for throwing a drink at fans in January 2024.
- Then Tennessee Titans owner Bud Adams was issued a $250,000 penalty in 2009 for a comparable obscene gesture.
Jones, a figure who is recognized for his media savvy, possesses an estimated wealth of around $16bn, so the penalty manageable for the wealthy proprietor.
